2011 Government Education Days
Thank you to the 13 programs from around the state that participated in this year's Government Education Days (GED) in Sacramento. Almost 160 staff and students attended Tuesday's workshop and activities hosted at the Sacramento Regional Conservation Corps. Senior Vice President for Public Policy, Advocacy, and Government Relations Charlotte Golar Richie attended Goverment Education Days representing YouthBuild USA and on Tuesday GED participants were able to also interact with Founder and CEO Dorothy Stoneman, who attended via an internet Skype call. On Wednesday, 134 staff and students participated in activities that centered around the traditional program of hearing from key legislatures about the importance of civic engagement and how students can learn to advocate for themselves at the local, state and federal levels. Wednesday was a full day of speeches, panel discussions and visits with elected officials. Assemblymen Mike Eng and Jose Solorio visited the participants before they gathered across the street from the capitol. Later students got a personal tour of the Senate floor by Anthony Williams, who reports to Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg. While on the Senate floor, Assemblyman Mike Davis addressed many of the participants. Lastly, many programs and their staff and students made appointments with their respective districit legislators and told them about YouthBuild, the California YouthBuild Coalition and how their support of AB 1387 (Solorio) and AB 1294 (Furutani) will be crucial to at-risk and incarcerated youth being connected to programs like YouthBuild for successful reintegration into society after incarceration.
Santa Rosa YouthBuild's Teen Pride Program
Santa Rosa YouthBuild has built a relationship with their local Martial Arts Youth Institute. They are participating in the American Taekwondo Association's Teen Pride program, a leadership development curriculum. Their youth participate in Taekwondo training twice a week as part of their physical education requirements for their high school diploma, and have begun to earn rank. The benefits include increased physical fitness, increased stamina, increased strength, increased flexibility, increased attention span, and increased ability to deal with frustration.
