Now Accepting Applications for the 2011 Helene D. Stoneman Scholarship
August 22, 2011
Last year, with the assistance $20,000 of funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation PSE grant, YouthBuild USA made 21 Helene D. Stoneman Scholarship awards, nine of whom were from 2010 PSE YouthBuild programs and three were from 2011 PSE YouthBuild programs.
Today, thanks to $40,000 provided by the Postsecondary Education Initiative’s Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, New Profit, and Open Society Foundations grants, we are doubling the number of Helene D. Stoneman Scholars this year. We anticipate announcing forty 2011 Helene D. Stoneman Scholars, each of whom will receive a $2,000 gift to assist with their education.
As they did last year, at least one applicant from each PSE YouthBuild program will be given a priority for a 2011 Stoneman Scholarship. We encourage those of you who recommended last year’s Stoneman Scholars who are returning to school to re-nominate them, as they are given a priority by the Selection Committee. The Selection Committee gives additional priority to applicants seeking bachelor’s or graduate degrees.
Please have your graduates complete the application posted on the YouthBuild USA website and return it along with the other required information to you to complete your recommendation and submit the completed application to Charlie Clark, Vice President for Asset Development, YouthBuild USA, 58 Day Street, Somerville MA 02144 before this year’s application deadline of September 12, 2011. Charlie will be e-mailing a Stoneman Scholar Survey to the 2010 Helene D. Stoneman Scholars, which they may use to apply for a 2011 Stoneman Scholar Award. The Selection Committee will meet in early October to select the 2011 Stoneman Scholars. Please click here for application and scholarship details: www.youthbuild.org/stonemanscholars

LA's Mayor Elected to President of US Conference!
LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa
June 29, 2011
Mayor Villaraigosa was elected as President of the US Conference of Mayors at their recent meeting in mid-June. He has stated that he is an advocate for YouthBuild in Los Angeles, statewide and nationally. Let's reach out to Mayor Villaraigosa and thank him for his support of YouthBuild and encourage him to create a resolution amongst the conference of mayors in support of YouthBuild and urge Congress to fund the Department of Labor's YouthBuild appropriation. The California YouthBuild Coalition recommends asking Mayor Villaraigosa to advocate for funding in the amount of $115 million, which is the amount in the President’s budget for FY’12.
